CHIP Priority 1: Access to Care
Texas has the highest rate of uninsured persons in the nation, a position the state has held for many years. “Health insurance makes a difference in whether and when people get necessary medical care, where they get their care, and ultimately, how healthy people are” (Kaiser Family Foundation).
Goals
Goal #1: Maintain the current level of enrollments to access to care in the Enroll Gulf Coast Collaborative.
CHIP SMART Objectives
Objective 1.1: By December 31, 2021, increase the number of organizations that are actively participating in the Collaborative from 8 to 12.
Objective 1.2: By December 31, 2021, maintain the application assistance for Children Health Insurance Plan (CHIP), Medicaid and Marketplace enrollments (Baseline 2,800).
Objective 1.3: By December 31, 2021, maintain the number of people who are educated about enrollment and insurance (Baseline 10,300).
CHIP Indicators
- Higher primary care provider rate in Houston area compared to the rest of Texas
- However, many adults and children are uninsured
The Houston Health Department is accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board.
